Terry Crews, Kevin Nealon join Adam Sandler comedy

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Terry Crews and Kevin Nealon have joined the cast of "Blended," a romantic comedy that will star Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, several individuals with knowledge of the production told TheWrap.

The film centers on a couple whose disastrous blind date finds them at a family resort with their children from previous marriages. Sandler and Barrymore play the couple, while Joe McHale will play Barrymore's former husband.

Nealon, who was a "Saturday Night Live" regular with Sandler, will play a man staying at the resort with his very attractive younger wife and their son. Crews will play the host of the couple's African vacation who sings and entertains them.

The film begins production later this month, shooting in both South Africa and Atlanta.

Frank Coraci, who previously oversaw Sandler's "Click," will direct the film from a script by Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera. Sandler will produce through his Happy Madison Productions, while Mike Karz will produce under his Gulfstream Pictures banner.

Nealon just wrapped the Steven Brill comedy "Walk of Shame" while Crews, comfortable doing both comedy and action, just appeared in "Scary Movie 5."

Crews has also wrapped a trio of films due out later this year - "Reach Me," "Aztec Warrior" and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," to which he lent his voice.

Lawyer asks if boy mature enough to aid defense

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) ? Attorneys for a 12-year-old California boy charged with killing his sister said Wednesday they wonder if he is mature enough to aid his defense.

The remarks came after the boy attended a closed juvenile court proceeding and was told he had been charged with second-degree murder with a special allegation for use of a dangerous weapon in the stabbing death of his 8-year-old sister.

Second-degree indicates the killing was not premeditated.

His sister Leila Fowler, was killed in the family's Sierra Nevada foothill home last month while the two children were home alone, authorities said.

"Can a 12-year-old be psychologically, intellectually and emotionally mature enough to aid attorneys in defending himself against the most serious of charges?" asked attorney Steve Plesser, who has been hired by the family to defend the boy.

The boy did not enter a plea at the hearing.

The Associated Press is withholding his name because he is a juvenile. Wednesday's hearing was not open to the public.

Plesser said neither he nor his law partner Mark Reichel had seen the evidence that led the Calaveras County district attorney to charge the boy. Still, they believe he is not guilty of the crime that terrified the rural community of Valley Springs and baffled investigators and the FBI for two weeks.

"We have no reason to have any doubts about our client's innocence," Plesser said.

Investigators went door-to-door in the area and searched barns, stables, outbuildings and ponds for evidence. They also collected DNA at the scene and from family members.

The attorneys declined to discuss specific details of the case during brief statements they made after the hearing, but they did talk in general about the legal issues they are facing.

"We have questions," Plesser said. "Why do the police think the minor did this? Why would a 12-year-old commit an offense like this? And how did it not lead to an immediate arrest and it took 2,000 hours of resources by the sheriff's office and the FBI? We're confident we'll get the answers when we examine and test the evidence."

Ken Rosenfeld, a Sacramento legal analyst and attorney, said that if the boy is convicted he cannot be held past his 25th birthday under California statutes.

Most young people convicted of similar crimes are paroled by age 19 or 20, said Rosenfeld, who is not associated with the case.

"The juvenile court system is designed for rehabilitation," Rosenfeld said. "If his sentence follows precedent and he does well in the system and doesn't get himself in trouble, he'll be out when he's 19 or 20."

The boy was arrested Saturday after a two-week manhunt for a mystery intruder the boy had said he saw in the home before he found his sister bleeding.

On Tuesday, Reichel told the AP the youngster might have lied about seeing a long-haired man fleeing the scene, but that doesn't make the boy the killer.

He said his client might have made up a "macho" story about scaring away the intruder because he was scared.

The children's father and his fiancee were at a Little League game at the time of the stabbing. The boy called them to report that he had seen an intruder in the home, and the couple called 911 and sped home.

After the hearing, which was attended by the boy's father Mark Fowler, his fiancee Krystal Walters, and the boy's biological mother Pricilla Rodriguez, attorney Reichel said the family wants to be left alone.

"As they travel down this incredibly difficult path, they are obviously extremely concerned about their son, who they also dearly love," he said. "I'm sure every family in America can understand they are going through extremely difficult times. This is a good family."

Can math models of gaming strategies be used to detect terrorism networks?

May 16, 2013 ? The answer is yes, according to a paper in the SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics.

In a paper published in the journal last month, authors Anthony Bonato, Dieter Mitsche, and Pawel Pralat describe a mathematical model to disrupt flow of information in a complex real-world network, such as a terrorist organization, using minimal resources.

Terror networks are comparable in their structure to hierarchical organization in companies and certain online social networks, where information flows in one direction from a source, which produces the information or data, downwards to sinks, which consume it. Such networks are called hierarchical social networks.

"In such networks, the flow of information is often one way," explains author Pawel Pralat. "For example, a celebrity such as Justin Bieber sends out a tweet, which is sent to millions of his followers. These followers send out their own retweets, and so on. We may therefore view hierarchical social networks as directed networks without cycles, or directed acyclic graphs (DAGs)."

Here, there is no requirement for reciprocity (the celebrity does not necessarily follow his or her followers). Similarly, in a terrorist network, the leaders pass plans down to the foot soldiers, and usually only one messenger needs to receive the message for the plan to be executed.

Disruption of the flow of information would correspond to halting the spread of news in an online social network or intercepting messages in a terror network.

The authors propose a generalized stochastic model for the flow and disruption of information based on a two-player outdoor game called "Seepage," where players who depict agents attempt to block the movement of another player, an intruder, from a source node to a sink. "The game -- motivated by the 1973 eruption of the Eldfell volcano in Iceland -- displays some similarities to an approach used in mathematical counterterrorism, where special kinds of DAGs are used to model the disruption of terrorist cells," says Pralat.

The motivating eruption caused a major crisis at the time, as lava flow threatened to close off the harbor, the island's main source of income. In the game, inhabitants attempt to protect the harbor by pouring water on the volcanic lava to halt its progress. A mathematical model of the game pits two opponents against each other -- the sludge, or intruder, against the greens, or agents -- forming a directed acyclic graph, with one source (the top of the volcano) and many sinks representing the lake. The parameter, "seepage," represents the amount of contamination, and the "green number" corresponds to the number of agents required to halt it.

A previous study modeled terrorist cells as partially ordered sets (a special kind of DAG), which are often used in mathematics to analyze an ordering, sequencing, or arrangement of distinct objects. In such a system, terrorist plans are formulated by nodes at the top of the hierarchy, which represent the leaders or maximal nodes of the set. The plans are transmitted down to the nodes at the bottom: these represent foot soldiers in a terror network or minimal nodes in the set who would be presumed to carry out these plans. The assumption is that one messenger is sufficient for reception and execution of the plan. Thus, if the partially ordered set represents a courier network for a terrorist organization, the intention would be to block all routes from the maximal node to the minimal nodes by capturing or killing a subset of agents.

In this paper, the authors utilize the similarities in the previous terrorist cell model to Seepage, where greens try to prevent the sludge from moving to the sinks by blocking nodes. A number of different winning strategies employed by both players are explored when played on a DAG. The seepage and green number for disrupting a given hierarchical social network are analyzed.

The primary difference from the previous study's model is that the Seepage model is dynamic: greens can move and choose new sets of nodes over time. The authors determine that Seepage is a more realistic model of counterterrorism, as the agents do not necessarily act all at once, but over time.

The analysis is made in two types of terrorist network structures, as Pralat explains, "We consider two extreme profiles: one where the network is regular, where every agent has about the same number of connections. The second profile is power law, where some agents have many connections, but most have very few." This is analyzed by considering the total degree distribution of nodes in the DAG. In regular DAGs, each level of the DAG would have nodes with about the same out-degree (number of outgoing edges emanating from a node), while power law DAGs would have many more low-degree nodes and a few with high degrees.

Mathematical analysis allows the authors to determine what point in a network would be most effective for disrupting messages. "Our mathematical results reinforce the view that intercepting the information or message in a hierarchical social network following a power law is more difficult close to levels near the source. For regular networks, it does not matter as much where the message is disrupted," says Pralat. "Future work could look at more complex profiles of networks, along with developing effective algorithms for disrupting the flow of information in a DAG using our game-theoretic approach."

Abercrombie & Fitch Agrees To Bangladesh Safety Accord

Apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch announced Wednesday that it would agree to the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, a spokeswoman said.

The pact began circulating last year and aims to improve worker safety and labor rights. It has gained momentum since the Rana Plaza factory building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing more than 1,100 workers.

According to MarketWatch, Abercrombie is the first major U.S. retailer to agree to the accord after more than two dozen mostly European companies signed in the wake of the Bangladesh collapse. PVH Corp., maker of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, was the first American company to commit, in March 2012.

In an email to The Huffington Post Wednesday night, Abercrombie confirmed it has verbally agreed to the accord.

"We are committed to Bangladesh and support industry-wide efforts to improve safety standards," Kim Harr, Abercrombie's director of sustainability, wrote in a statement. "We believe this is the right thing to do to bring about sustainable, effective change."

In the wake of the Bangladesh collapse, a number of large global retailers, including H&M and Zara parent Inditex, have agreed to the accord. But some large U.S. retailers, including Gap and Walmart, have failed to sign the legally binding agreement.

On Tuesday, Walmart announced it plans to develop its own safety program aimed at improving conditions in Bangladesh. But the retail giant's announcement was met with much skepticism.

HuffPost reported:

What Walmart announced on Tuesday is a voluntary program that amounts to no more than an aspirational statement, labor advocates said. They portrayed the announcement as a crafty public relations device: Noting that the deadline to sign the stricter industry-wide accord lands on Wednesday, they took Walmart?s statement as a sign the company will not go along with that agreement, while still finding a way to take credit for bold action.

Here are the retailers who have so far committed to the pact:

  • PVH

PVH, the company that owns labels Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Izod labels, initially made a commitment to factory safety in March 2012 and reaffirmed its commitment after the Bangladesh factory collapse, according to a company press release. PVH has pledged $2.5 million to the accord, Bloomberg News reports.

  • Tchibo

German retailer Tchibo also signed on to the pact last year.

  • H&M

Swedish retailer H&M became the first company in the wake of the Bangladesh building collapse to sign the safety pact. The company said in a statement that it hoped the agreement would help lead to an "industry in which no worker needs to fear fires, building collapses or other accidents that could be prevented with reasonable health and safety measures."

  • C&A

Just hours after H&M made their announcement to sign on to the pact, Dutch retailer C&A followed suit.

  • Inditex SA

Inditex SA, owner of the Zara chain, committed to the pact as well. A spokesperson told CNBC that "the accord has not come out yet, but as you know we have played a very active part in its development."

  • Tesco

"For the multinational retailers like Tesco who source from Bangladesh, we must help it to change in a positive way, a way which sustains and improves the livelihoods of all those who work in the industry," Kevin Grace, director of Tesco, wrote in a blog post about the British retailer's decision to join the pact.

  • Benetton

After initially denying its ties to the collapsed Bangladesh factory only to admit later that its clothes were indeed made there, Italian fashion brand Benetton committed to the pact on May 14, according to a company spokesperson.

  • El Corte Ingles

The Spanish department store group El Corte Ingles said their suppliers signed on to the pact, Scott Nova of the Worker Rights Consortium told The Huffington Post.

  • Next

Nova also confirmed that British retailer Next has signed on to the accord.

  • Marks & Spencer

British retailer Marks & Spencer, which sources from 60 factories in Bangladesh according to the Chicago Tribune, committed to the accord on May 13.

  • Carrefour

The French retailer Carrefour announced on May 14 that it would sign the accord, according to Reuters.

  • Loblaw Companies

Home sales, prices in Canada signal 'fabled soft landing ...

Canadian home prices remain incredibly calm, cool, and collected

While it?s too early for victory laps, evidence is building that the Canadian housing market has pulled off the ?fabled soft landing?, says Douglas Porter, chief economist for BMO Capital Markets.

But not everybody thinks so

Here?s why Steve Eisman, who rose to fame betting against subprime mortgages in the U.S., says he is pessimistic about the Canadian housing market. Read on

Sales of existing homes climbed 0.6% in April from March, which trimmed the year-over-year decline to 3.1%, the Canadian Real Estate Association said on Wednesday.

Porter points out that recent surprises in home sale data have consistently been on the high, rather than low, side.

Sales have risen in three of the four past months and are pretty much unchanged since last August when tighter mortgage rules first began to bite. Porter said other key metrics support the view of a ?well-tamed? market. Sales and listings are balanced and the backlog of unsold homes is at a slightly high, but ?unremarkable? 6.6 months.

Adrienne Warren of Scotiabank says even with tougher lending rules, low interest rates continue to encourage sales. After a sharp dip in the first few months after the new rules were introduced, sales have steadied in 2013.

However, it?s home prices where the stability of the market shows most, said Porter.

?Despite the very loud gnashing of teeth and excessive wringing of hands for well over a year on the topic, Canadian home prices remain incredibly calm, cool, and collected,? he said.

CREA?s home price index rose 2.2% in April from a year earlier, echoing similar increases in every major index for Canadian housing prices. Porter noted that 20 of the 26 cities are still reporting price increases over the past year, ?a far cry from a hard landing.?

?While some are highlighting the fact that prices are now rising at ?their slowest pace since the 2009 recession? the plain facts are that: a) they are still rising, and b) faster than inflation, and c) prices are at all-time highs. Some meltdown,? said Porter.

It was a view echoed by several other economists.

Sonya Gulati, senior economist at TD economics, also hailed the ?spring thaw? in Canada?s housing market. But while there are signs of promise, she does not expect a robust revival.

?There simply is no economic impetus for a full-fledged comeback in the cards. In turn, the 2013 spring home-buying season should be mediocre at best,? she wrote.

When green means danger: A stunning new species of palm-pitviper from Honduras

May 14, 2013 ? A new species of green palm-pitviper of the genus Bothriechis is described from a seriously threatened cloud forest reserve in northern Honduras. Because of similarity in color pattern and scalation, the new species (Bothriechis guifarroi) was previously confused with other Honduran palm pitvipers. Genetic analysis revealed that the closest relatives of the new species are actually found over 600 km to the south, in the mountains of Costa Rica.

The study was published in the open access journal Zookeys.

The gorgeous new species was discovered by scientists during two expeditions in 2010 aimed at studying the fauna of Texiguat Wildlife Refuge, one of the most endemism-rich and diverse highland forests in Mesoamerica. This beautiful, but highly toxic, snake represents the 15th endemic species occurring in the region. Texiguat Wildlife Refuge was created in 1987 to protect populations of wildlife such as the famous but elusive jaguar and Central America tapir, as well as howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, and a variety of endemic amphibians, reptiles, and plants.

To draw attention to the dedication and sacrifice of many grassroots conservationists in Honduras and Central America, the new species was named in honor of Mario Guifarro of Olancho. Guifarro was a former hunter and gold miner who became an outspoken conservationist when he saw the vast rainforests of eastern Honduras being destroyed and converted to cattle ranches. After years of threats and multiple attempts on his life, Guifarro was ambushed and murdered on 15 September 2007 while on a mission to delimit a biosphere reserve for the indigenous Tawahka.

The lead author of the study Dr Josiah Townsend, Department of Biology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, comments on the importance of the discovery and conservation status of the new species: "The description of Bothriechis guifarroi has important implications for Central American biogeography as well as conservation. We recommend that B. guifarroi be immediately classified as Critically Endangered due to its limited known area of occurrence and the potential for anthropogenic damage to its habitat. We also consider that this species warrants immediate consideration for protection under CITES, given its striking appearance and high potential for exploitation in the pet trade."

The 77th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival Means ... - The Connector

untitled-2

Photos and article by Sheronda Gipson, contributor

Ah! Spring in Atlanta. At first only noticed by the schizophrenic weather, pollen covered cars and wheezing and sneezing of allergy sufferers. But through watery eyes and sniffling noses there is a beacon of light called the Atlanta Dogwood Festival.

untitled-8Walter Rich founded the first Atlanta Dogwood festival in 1936. Even though the festival took a brief hiatus from 1941-1964 during World War II and then a temporary venue change in 2008, the Atlanta Dogwood festival is the most popular and the city?s best indicator that Spring has arrived. The renowned Artist?s Market features artist?s works of varying mediums from across the country.

Makaela Davis, first-year animation and graphic design student, not only attended the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, she has been a part of it in several ways. ?I have a part-time job there regularly,? Davis says.

When asked if this was her first time at the festival, Davis replied, ?Last year I won second place in their annual high school exhibition/contest, so I spent more time actually enjoying the festival then. They?re really supportive of young artists. It was a statewide contest, and everyone in it was really encouraged by the event.?

?There are plenty of awesome events for the less artistically inclined individuals to enjoy too. They have carnival rides, fair food, dog show and live music. It?s like a huge fair even if you don?t visit a single one of the hundreds of art stands that line the sidewalk,? Davis says.

untitled-5The Atlanta Dogwood Festival has a well rounded crowded with rides and games for children of all ages, live bands and the Disc Dog Southern National Tournament that was a huge hit this year. ?The dog disc contest was my favorite,? says Hally Joseph, first-year M.F.A writing student.

Sybil Vaughn, who has attended the Atlanta Dogwood Festival every year for the last ten years, ?says ?This year the art looked about the same, the vendors, the same, but there was one thing that stood out?more food stations and trucks. There were more food trucks and vendors, selling everything from fried oysters, BBQ pork sandwiches, gigantic turkey legs, grilled brussel sprouts and sweet funnel cakes laden with powdered sugar, to draft beer, homemade lemonade and $8 margaritas.?

The Atlanta Dogwood Festival is held every year at Piedmont Park. For more information, visit http://www.dogwood.org

Rethinking the Paths Business Training Can Lead To | Schools ...

It is common for small business owners to outsource their IT and accounting services. This is understandable since most business owners and independent contractors are more focused on their individual products and services. However, outsourcing can be expensive. The more that working professionals can learn to do on their own, the more control they have over the financial health of their business.

Accounting Training.

90% Beyond The Hills

All Critics (79) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (71) | Rotten (8)

The final shot, with windshield wipers struggling to clean away a torrent of muddy water, suggests that no human agency is great enough to handle this world's misery.

"Beyond the Hills" seethes with astonishment and rage at a broken society marooned between the 21st century and the 16th.

It is a haunting movie, dealing with superstitions, possession, even exorcism, one in which Mungiu poses no easy answers, because there are none to be found.

If you long for the bleak intelligence of an Ingmar Bergman film, where humankind is deeply flawed and God is indifferently silent and the landscape is cloaked in perpetual winter, then Beyond the Hills promises to be your cup of despair.

There are no easy villains or heroes in this sad and slow but forcefully told tale, which exhibits the same humanity Mungiu brought to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, his abortion drama that won the 2007 Palme d'Or.

A film that asks its viewer to consider the nature of good and evil, love and trust - and trust that turns into something like blind faith.

Beyond the Hills' undercurrents prove more interesting than its storyline or characters.

Strikingly shot and punishingly long ...

(Writer-director Christian) Mungiu balances his film's more disturbing content with peaceful shots of the idyllic, surrounding countryside and of intimacy between the two women while slowly building to an inevitable conclusion.

When the ill and unstable Alina returns to the monastery, just so she can be with her beloved, Beyond the Hills becomes a species of those exorcism movies that audiences gorge on, only done with a realism and ambiguity usually missing from the genre.

What makes this movie unique is that it holds literally everyone in the film accountable for the unfortunate goings on.

It's an exorcism movie for everyone who thought, after Mungiu's gruelling abortion buddy-movie 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, that this guy should do an exorcism movie

It's an enigmatic and austere film from a region where political, sexual and religious repression are as stifling as the sooty air.

Mungui's rigorous approach to filmmaking isn't a ton of fun to watch, but his ideas stick with you.

It delivers an emotional punch, in what its director has called a story about the sin of indifference.

Such is the rigorous and high-minded nature of Romanian cinema that even a real-life exorcism story can inspire something loftier than a horror movie.

Heartbreak at a Romanian convent

...Cristian Mungiu has taken a real life event...to consider deeply human philosophies such as freedom vs. discipline, love vs. security, the choices facing those without financial recourse and the hypocrisies of organized religions.

I found it riveting to watch and fascinating to think about afterwards.

An undeniably tough watch.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell convicted of first-degree murder in abortion case

Philadelphia Police Department via AP file

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Philadelphia abortion provider Kermit Gosnell was convicted Monday of three counts of first-degree murder for the death of three babies that prosecutors said were delivered alive and subsequently killed.

Gosnell, 72, could face the death penalty when the jury reconvenes for the sentencing phase next week.

"He's disappointed and he's upset," defense lawyer Jack McMahon said of his client, who appeared calm in the courtroom.

Gosnell was acquitted of one count of first-degree murder in a fourth abortion, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

The jury also found Gosnell not guilty of third-degree murder but guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of?Karnamaya Mongar, a 41-year-old woman who died after an anesthesia overdose during a 2009 abortion.

Gosnell was convicted of a host of other charges, including infanticide, conspiracy and running a corrupt organization, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

Defense attorney Jack McMahon tells reporters that Dr. Kermit Gosnell is upset over the murder verdicts against him, but that the jury did its work by dismissing the other murder charges.

The verdict was announced on the 10th day of deliberations, capping a two-month trial that featured grisly testimony about botched late-term abortions and became a flashpoint for both sides in the national abortion debate.

Many of the 250-plus counts were tied to violations of state abortion law, which prohibits terminating pregnancies after 24 weeks.

The most serious charges stemmed from allegations that Gosnell delivered babies alive during late-term abortions and then snipped their spinal cords or directed underlings to do it.

"It was literally a beheading," unlicensed medical-school graduate?Stephen Massof, who worked at Gosnell?s clinic, testified during the trial. "It is separating the brain from the body."

The defense denied that any of the births were live and said that Gosnell used drugs to stop the fetuses' hearts before they were delivered. Three counts of first-degree murder were dismissed during the trial for lack of evidence the fetuses were alive.

McMahon said Gosnell got a "fair trial," and noted that the case started with eight counts or murder and ended with convictions on three. "We have to deal with that," he said.

Jury finds Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell guilty of three counts of first-degree murder for the death of three babies that prosecutors said were delivered alive and subsequently killed. NBC News' Chris Clackum reports.

Asked whether he might be able to make a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty if he drops any plan to appeal, McMahon said "that's always a possibility."

Gosnell had no comment as he was brought out of the courthouse after changing from a suit into jailhouse garb.

After a 2010 raid of the clinic, prosecutors charged nine workers, including his wife, with crimes ranging from perjury to murder. Eight pleaded guilty and a number took the stand against Gosnell.

At the trial, Gosnell's co-defendant Eileen O'Neill was found guilty of conspiracy to commit corruption and theft by deception for deceiving patients and insurance companies by pretending to be a licensed physician.

The allegations against Gosnell were detailed in a 300-page grand jury report that described his clinic as a filthy house of horrors full of broken-down equipment, splattered with blood, and staffed by unlicensed employees who did much of the medical work.

Aborted fetuses and their body parts were stockpiled in cabinets and freezers, in plastic bags, bottles, even cat-food containers. Jars with severed feet lined shelves,?prosecutors said.

"It was a baby charnel house," the grand jury report said.

Trial testimony was often graphic or disturbing.

One employee testified that after Gosnell snipped the neck of a fetus delivered at 30 weeks, he joked it was big enough to "walk to the bus stop."

Massof said that so many women were given abortion-inducing drugs at once that "it would rain fetuses ... fetuses and blood all over the place."

Abortion opponents seized on the allegations against Gosnell as evidence that abortions are unsafe, while abortion-rights advocates argued that restricting access to abortion would drive women to unscrupulous clinics like the one he ran.

Arthur Caplan, the?head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center and an NBC News contributor, criticized authorities for taking so long to shut down the clinic but said his conviction "does not resolve much concerning abortions in America."

"If there are women who seek to end pregnancies late in fetal development, there will be other Gosnells who will crawl out to ?help? them," Caplan said.

"The real solution to preventing future Gosnells is to make contraception widely available and put as few obstacles as possible between women and emergency contraception.? ?

Bangladesh To Raise Minimum Wage For Garment Workers

Officials in Bangladesh have set up a panel to raise the minimum wage for garment workers following a factory collapse that claimed over 1,000 lives.

The panel will be made up of factory workers, factory owners and government representatives, and it will issue recommendations on wages for factory workers within three months, according to the Associated Press. Textile Minister Abdul Latif Siddique told Agence France-Presse that ?there is no doubt? that workers can expect a pay increase.

The collapse of Rana Plaza last month has brought new attention to the lives of garment workers in Bangladesh, who make a minimum wage of $38 a month and often face substandard workplace safety. Rana Plaza housed five garment factories.

In 2010, Bangladesh increased the minimum wage for garment workers by 80 percent following worker protests, the Associated Press reported. Current per capita income in the country is just $1,940 per year.

The tragedy has put some western retailers in an uncomfortable position, as some customers condemned brands' reliance on cheap labor and unsafe factories following the tragedy. Other customers, however, have said that they prioritize cheap prices over workplace safety. Indeed, a proposal to increase safety at factories in Bangladesh was deemed "not financially feasible" and then rejected by major brands last month, according to Yahoo News.

Meanwhile, criticism of Bangladeshi working conditions has the government there worried that some retailers may pull out of the country, potentially putting a dent in the $18 billion in textiles it exports each year. While Disney ceased manufacturing in Bangladesh in March, most retailers -- including some that manufactured goods at Rana Plaza, like Benetton -- have said they plan to continue using Bangladeshi suppliers.

Providing jobs offers great benefits to the country -- as long as the workers are safe, the Benetton CEO told HuffPost in an interview last week.

According to Worker Rights Consortium Executive Director Scott Nova, who offered his calculations in The Atlantic, making factories safe in Bangladesh would cost around $3 billion -- which translates to consumers paying just 25 cents extra on goods made in the country.

How To Make Your Boyfriend Happy - Relationship Love Advice

4avg.rating 4 votes.

How To Make Your Boyfriend HappyIf you were to watch certain TV shows you?d see women who think that the entire universe revolves around them and that it?s a man?s duty to keep women happy. In fact most of these show that it?s never about how to keep your boyfriend happy ? under any circumstances. Now to a certain extent, and based on our most primitive instincts, it is important for a man to keep a woman happy ? after all she?ll be the person in the relationship responsible for giving him children. Okay I know that sounds really backwards to read but remember that by being in a relationship you?re now starting your own ?tribe? to one extent or another ? that?s just human nature at work folks.

Anyways getting back to the original point here ? in a healthy and happy relationship both people work to keep each other happy. The best part about this is that keeping that guy you love truly happy is rarely about grand gestures like expensive gifts or foreign holidays. Instead it?s the simple things that can make a guy happy and I?ve put together a list of these for you.

Men Aren?t Psychic

Probably the biggest myth in male-female relationships is that ?if a guy truly loves you he?ll know what you?re thinking?. Ladies this is just the worst kind of pop-psychology going and I?ll be blunt guys hate having to try to guess what you?re thinking. They hate it even more when you say things like ?..if you loved me you?d know?. One of the easiest ways to make your boyfriend happy is to not play mind games with him ? all guys hate it. So when your fella asks you why you?re upset or where you?d really love to go on vacation just give him a straight answer; it will literally make his day!

Sex Does Matter

Intimacy In RelationshipsAll too often sex is used as a weapon or a tool in relationships for people to get what they want, and the responsibility for this lies mostly with women. Now let me be straight here and say that there?s a lot, lot more to any relationship than just sex but if you think a relationship between two healthy young (or old) people can survive without intimacy then you?re definitely on the wrong path.

We all have our own list of things that either turn us on or turn us off so make sure you share those with your boyfriend. If you?re wondering how to make your boyfriend happy in bed it?s simply down to not refusing sex because you want him to do as he?s told and to share your own little sexual dreams and fantasies with him too.

Don?t Always Play Hard To Get

At the start of any relationship men expect to have to pursue a woman, and women expect to be chased down, courted and seduced ? again this is the natural order of things. Now that?s not to say that a woman can?t chase down a guy she wants either ? all is fair in love and war after all! The problem most guys have in any relationship that?s just out of the ?honeymoon phase? is that some women still want to be chased so that they feel wanted. Playing hard to get in the early days of a relationship could mean a guy just walking away to find a more reasonably minded woman, but playing hard to get in an established relationship is childish. Don?t do it.

Insecurity Can Cause Paranoia

Contrary to what you might read in certain magazines making a man feel insecure isn?t a good idea. Actually it?s one of the worst things you can do because what starts off as mild insecurity can often lead to rampant paranoia. I?ve read articles which suggest that making a guy feel borderline insecure is a way to make him appreciate you more but usually the exact opposite happens. This ties in with the idea of expecting men to be psychic and playing mind games ? don?t do it. You don?t need to cater to his ever whim to keep your man happy but I can guarantee you that playing with his emotions will end in disaster for your relationship sooner or later.

Making your boyfriend happy doesn?t require a degree in psychology or any kind of unusual tactics. All you need to be, in as much as is possible, is the same girl he fell in love with in the first place.

Yes it really is that simple.

Bulls' Thibodeau fined $35,000

CHICAGO (AP) ? The NBA has fined Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau $35,000 for comments he made about the officiating following Friday's loss to the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The league announced the fine on Sunday.

Thibodeau was upset that Nazr Mohammed got ejected for shoving LeBron James to the floor and accused the Heat's superstar of flopping. He also said calls weren't going to go the Bulls' way.

The Heat won the game to go up 2-1 in the series. Game 4 is Monday at the United Center.

Sheriff: Body found, believed to be missing girl

OTTAWA, Kan. (AP) ? A body recovered amid an intensive search is believed to be that of a missing 18-month-old girl whose mother was found dead along with two men on a Kansas farm days ago, authorities said Sunday.

Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said in a statement that remains recovered in eastern Kansas on Saturday are believed to those of Lana Leigh Bailey, a child that authorities previously said they presumed dead.

"I want the family of Lana, and all the victims, to know that this investigation will continue until we are confident we have collected as much evidence as we can to ensure justice is served on behalf of all four victims," Richards said in a statement.

Richards said the body was discovered by an Osage County sheriff's deputy who was searching an area for items that could be connected to the deaths reported May 6 at a farm home in nearby Franklin County.

Kyle Flack was charged Friday with capital murder in the deaths of Lana's 21-year-old mother, Kaylie Bailey, and 30-year-old Andrew Stout. The 27-year-old convicted felon also was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder in those deaths as well as that of 31-year-old Steven White, authorities have said.

The evidence collected Saturday when the child's body was recovered led investigators to believe it was Lana, his statement said without elaboration.

"We hope that a forensic examination will make a final identification," Richards added. "Until the identity is confirmed investigators will continue following up on all tips, leads and information connected to this crime."

The statement did not provide any details of where the body was discovered or how the infant had died.

Richards told the Associated Press by telephone early Sunday that he would not have any further details beyond the statement. The Franklin County sheriff's office said its next scheduled statement on the investigation would be Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, search crews had deployed using boats and sonar equipment in search of the child. Earlier authorities had said investigators were scouring ponds and other waterways in the area looking for the child's body.

The investigation had included searching the farm and other rural areas in the 50-mile stretch between Ottawa and Emporia, where Kaylie Bailey's car was found Tuesday.

Franklin County Attorney Stephen Hunting said Friday that a firearm was used against the victims at the farm, but didn't elaborate on whether that meant they were fatally shot. Authorities have not commented on a motive.

Richards said earlier that the extensive investigation of what he called a "horrific crime" had taken a toll and that members of the investigative team have required medical attention after searching in difficult areas. Others sought counsel from a chaplain.

Opt out or left out? The economics of stay-at-home moms?

for NBC News

Allicyn Willix plays with children, 4-year-old Conner, and 15-month-old Parker. Willix has been a stay-at-home mom since her second child was born. She quit her low wage job because it was costing her more to pay day care fees and says, "It was the best decision I've ever made." There are approximately 5 million stay-at-home moms in the U.S.

Conventional wisdom holds that stay-at-home moms do so because they can afford not to work. Instead, experts say, many moms appear to be staying home with their kids because they can?t afford to work.

?They just think they don?t have enough education and skill ? where their pay would cover their child care, transportation and clothes,? said Stephanie Coontz, a professor of history and family studies at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., and co-chair of the Council on Contemporary Families.

Of course, there are plenty of middle-class women with a college education who are staying home full time with their children. But several studies conducted in recent years have found that less-educated moms and those who live in in lower-income households are generally more likely to stay home with the kids than more-educated moms and or those who live in higher-income households.

An analysis of government data on married mothers ages 25 to 54, prepared for the Council on Contemporary Families several years ago, found that women whose husbands were in the lowest 25 percent of the male earnings distribution were most likely to stay home full-time.

The next most likely group of moms to stay home were all the way on the other end of the economic spectrum, married to husbands whose income places them in the top 5 percent of earners.

Paula England, a sociology professor at New York University and one of the paper?s co-authors, said her other, more recent research also has shown that overall, more-educated moms are more likely to be employed. She thinks that?s because they can get jobs that pay well enough and are interesting enough to make it worthwhile to work.

?Women who can?t get good jobs anyhow ? maybe not enough to cover their child care costs or maybe not worth it in meaning ? are the ones who are more likely to, if they have a husband, make the calculation (to stay home),? England said. ?It really is kind of the opposite of what a lot of people believe.?

She noted that there is that tiny slice of stay-at-home moms with very high-earning husbands. But across the board, she said, the better a job a mom can get, the more likely she is to be employed.

A Gallup analysis of 45,000 adult women released last year found that 75 percent of college-educated women with kids under 18 were working, compared with 48 percent of those moms with a high school degree or less. Gallup also found that 77 percent of moms with household incomes of $90,000 or more were working, compared with 45 percent of moms with household incomes of less than $24,000.

Rose Kreider, chief of the Fertility and Family Statistics Branch for the U.S. Census Bureau, said her research also suggests that instead of an ?opt out revolution? involving highly educated married moms who want to leave the workforce, many moms who are younger, less educated, Hispanic and/or caring for very young children could be left out because they can?t get a job that pays well enough to cover hefty child care costs.

for NBC News

Willix plays with her children.

That?s the situation stay-at-home mom Allicyn Willix found herself in last year, after she had her second child.

Willix, who lives in rural Bonnerdale, Ark., had just earned a college degree in English and gotten a job making $9.50 an hour working in a chiropractor?s clinic when she found out she was pregnant.

She had planned to go back to work part-time after the baby was born, but scrapped those plans after realizing she?d have to make at least $11 an hour just to break even on child care costs.

Willix, who is 28, loves that she gets to watch her 1- and 4-year-old kids grow and learn. But she would have preferred to return to her job.

?I did still want to work,? she said.

Most women appear to feel that way. A Pew Research Center report released in March found that 32 percent of moms with children under age 18 think the ideal situation is to work full-time, while 47 percent said they would prefer to work part-time. Twenty percent said they would prefer not to work at all.

For Willix, it?s partly because she misses the work itself, and the regular interaction with other adults. And it?s partly because it?s tough to live on her husband?s income of $17 an hour.

Willix?s parents help the young family out with food costs and provided financial backing for a home they are building. Meanwhile, an aunt is letting them rent a house she owns at a very low rate.

Nevertheless, Willix said they live paycheck to paycheck. They can only afford to drive to nearby Hot Springs twice a week, for things like visits to the library, and she can no longer send her 4-year-old to preschool.

Willix expects that she?ll start looking for a job when her children get older and child care costs become more reasonable. Meanwhile, she said she does appreciate that she is able to be home, teaching her children good lifelong habits.

?The good side is that I see my kids every day,? she said.
