Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, seen giving a speech during a campaign rally in Rome Friday, appears to have shrugged off recent scandals.
By Claudio Lavanga, Producer, NBC News
ROME ? He is the comeback kid of Italian politics, but Silvio Berlusconi's attempt to revive his career is under the spotlight after he defended fascist wartime leader Benito Mussolini at a ceremony for victims of the Nazi Holocaust.?
The former prime minister said Mussolini's decision to echo Nazi Germany's anti-Jewish laws had been his "worst fault" as a leader "who in so many other ways did well."
He said: "It is difficult now to put yourself in the shoes of people who were making decisions at that time. Obviously the government of that time, out of fear that German power might lead to victory, preferred to ally itself with Hitler's Germany rather than opposing it."
The remarks, given?to reporters in Milan on Sunday, prompted outrage from many quarters in Italy and overseas.
?He has lost the plot," said David Patsi, president of the Italian school Dante Alighieri in Jerusalem and whose father was killed in a concentration camp. "He is an idiot. But I am not surprised. Sometime he even reminds me of Mussolini."
He added: "But I don?t think he is the problem. The problem is that a large number of Italians agree with him.??
That helps explain why Berlusconi could still make his comeback, despite a track record would have forced almost any other politician to retire from public life.
In November 2011, he was forced to resign as prime minister after it became clear that his denial of the economic crisis was bringing Italy to the brink of disaster.
In October last year, he was sentenced to four years in prison for an epic offshore tax fraud, put off pending appeals to higher courts.
And, if that weren't enough, he is still on trial for allegedly paying an underage exotic dancer for sex.
His popularity hit an all-time low and the 76-year-old with a net worth of almost $6 billion --?according to Forbes magazine -- might have been expected to retire to one of his many mansions.
But he was simply waiting for the chance to strike back in the flamboyant style that won him three terms as prime minister.
Following the resignation of Mario Monti -- the technocratic prime minister who replaced him in 2011 promising to reinvigorate Italy's languishing economy -- Berlusconi has done what he does best: He carpet-bombed the Italian media with guest appearances, clocking up an impressive 63 hours of airtime in only 21 days.
In essence, it's as if during the recent U.S. presidential election, former president George W. Bush was given more airtime than Barack Obama and Mitt Romney combined.
Crisis 'wasn't my fault'
Seems inconceivable, but then Italy has always been an exception in the Western world, and flamboyant and media-friendly Berlusconi, even as an outsider, draws a bigger audience than his closest competitors combined.
Officially, Berlusconi is not actually running as a candidate prime minister -- because this was the price it took to persuade the Northern League party to join?Berlusconi's People of Freedom party in a coalition.
But a good result in the elections could mean that all bets are off.
Karima el Marough, better known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer," was called to testify over allegations that former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi paid to have sex with her when she was still a minor. NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.
?Italy?s economic crisis wasn?t my fault. It was the consequence of the wider international crisis,? a defiant Berlusconi recently told a TV host, before he refused to apologize for previously denying the extent of the crisis.
It would seem to be an uphill task for Berlusconi to win the premiership for a fourth time -- in polls his coalition is trailing the center-left Democratic Party by at least 12 points.
But, after his TV onslaught, Berlusconi's bloc saw its poll rating rise by 3 percentage points.
Berlusconi 'very clever'
Italians are tired of painfully high unemployment rates, rising taxes, tax-evasion clampdowns and plummeting spending power.
But it remains to be seen whether they really believe Berlusconi when he claims that the economic crisis wasn't his fault and that his tax-cutting strategy is the solution.
?Berlusconi has been very clever. He stepped aside when the new government introduced very unpopular austerity measures and has come back in the limelight only now, saying that the cure was worse than the illness,? Maurizio Caprara, a journalist for the daily Corriere della Sera, said.
?Now he is trying to rally again his troops. Many became disillusioned following his many scandals, but many, as the polls show, may decide to give him one more try,? he added.
Monti recently called Berlusconi the "Pied Piper of Hamelin," who ?leads the mice to drown in the river, having fooled Italians three times already.?
And yet, at least according to his recently rising popularity, many Italians seem to find his tune irresistible.??

SEATTLE (AP) ? So far, no one is suggesting checkpoints or fences to keep Washington state's legal pot within its borders.
But Gov. Jay Inslee insists there are ways to prevent the bulk smuggling of the state's newest cash crop into the black market, including digitally tracking weed to ensure that it goes from where it is grown to the stores where it is sold.
With sales set to begin later this year, he hopes to be a good neighbor and keep vanloads of premium, legal bud from cruising into Idaho, Oregon and other states that don't want people getting stoned for fun.
It's not just about generating goodwill with fellow governors. Inslee is trying to persuade U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder not to sue to block Washington from licensing pot growers, processors and sellers. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law.
"I am going to be personally committed to have a well regulated, well disciplined, well tracked, well inventory-controlled, well law-enforcement-coordinated approach," said Inslee, who is due to give Holder more details this week.
Keeping a lid on the weed is just one of the numerous challenges Washington state authorities and their counterparts in Colorado ? where voters also legalized pot use ? will face in the coming months.
The potential of regulatory schemes to keep pot from being diverted isn't clear. Colorado already has intensive rules aimed at keeping its medical marijuana market in line, including the digital tracking of cannabis, bar codes on every plant, surveillance video and manifests of all legal pot shipments.
But law enforcement officials say marijuana from Colorado's dispensaries often makes its way to the black market, and even the head of the Colorado agency charged with tracking the medical pot industry suggests no one should copy its measures.
The agency has been beset by money woes and had to cut many of its investigators. Even if the agency had all the money it wanted, the state's medical pot rules are "a model of regulatory overreach," too cumbersome and expensive to enforce, Laura Harris said in a statement.
Last fall, voters made Washington and Colorado the first states to pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana and setting up systems of state-licensed growers, processors and retail stores where adults over 21 can walk in and buy up to an ounce of heavily taxed cannabis.
Both states are working to develop rules for the emerging pot industry.
The Obama administration could sue to block the legal markets from operating, on the grounds that actively regulating an illegal substance conflicts with federal drug law. The DOJ is reviewing the laws but has given no signals about its plans.
It has never sued states like Colorado that have regulated medical marijuana, even though it could under the same legal principles.
Part of the DOJ's political calculus in deciding whether to sue is likely to be how well the department believes the two states can keep the legal weed within their borders. During a meeting with Inslee last week, Holder asked a lot of questions about diversion, Inslee said.
Alison Holcomb, who led Washington's legal pot campaign, said it's important to respect states that haven't legalized weed by not flooding their black markets. The first step, she said, is for the state to figure out how much pot should be produced, and then grant licenses accordingly.
"Excess supply creates incentive to divert outside the state," she said.
Washington's Liquor Control Board is planning a comprehensive survey to estimate how much marijuana is consumed in the state.
Inslee has boasted about the effectiveness of the State Patrol's highway interdiction program in stopping drug trafficking. Traditional police work, combined with inventory controls, will be key to clamping down on diversion, he said.
Digital tracking of the weights of marijuana shipments between processors and retailers would help make sure there isn't "10- to 20-percent shrinkage that's going to the black market," he said.
But even if the state can prevent bulk pot from being diverted, there's nothing to keep customers from walking into multiple stores, or returning to the same store, to collect more than their 1-ounce limit. Some traffickers could recruit many people to buy weed for them.
Tom Gorman, head of the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug-Trafficking Area, said efforts to keep a lid on legal marijuana simply don't work.
Pot from Colorado's medical marijuana system ? often described as the most closely regulated in the world ? routinely makes its way into Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and points east, often from dispensaries that have sold out the back door, he said.
A brief law enforcement survey the organization conducted last summer turned up numerous cases in which suspects had made purchases at Colorado dispensaries before being busted in other states.
In the past two years, Colorado's medical pot regulators have levied 54 fines against licensed businesses, but have never revoked or suspended a license.
Matt Cook, the former director of Colorado's Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division, defended the "seed-to-store" regulations in the state.
Cook, who is applying for a job as a consultant to Washington's marijuana regulators, noted that at any time officials could check the digital records, pull the surveillance video or drop in for an inspection ? and the fear of getting busted keeps people in line.
Bob Hoban, whose law firm represents nearly 100 medical marijuana businesses in Colorado, agreed, and noted another incentive for dispensaries to behave.
"It's a cutthroat business," he said. "If somebody sees something unusual, they're going to provide a tip. ... There's just about as good of a safeguard as you can have for diversion in the state of Colorado, and a lot of that is Big Brother watching you."

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? A police truck packed with officers and detainees struck a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan's largest city, killing 10 of those aboard, officials said Sunday.
It was one of four blasts Saturday that left at least 24 people dead across the country. Attacks by insurgents are a daily occurrence around Afghanistan and the Afghan police with their unarmored pickup trucks and remote checkpoints are a common target.
In the Kandahar city blast, police had driven to a residential neighborhood of the city at night to inspect a bomb that had been found there, said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial government. They detained three suspects and were driving back with them in a police pickup truck when the vehicle struck another explosive buried in the road. Eight police officers and two detainees were killed in the blast.
Meanwhile, Afghan authorities accused NATO of killing three civilian men in a nighttime ambush in the eastern Logar province. The coalition disputed the account, saying it had no operations in Logar's Baraki Barak district Saturday night. NATO said there were three dead, but they were insurgents killed by Afghan forces.
Deputy provincial police chief Rais Khan Abdul Rahimzai said all three of the added were civilians. "They were brothers. They had dinner at one of their brother's houses in another part of the district and it was when they were driving back that they were ambushed by the foreign soldiers," Rahimzai said. "It was a misunderstanding in which foreign forces shot and killed three people."
A spokesman for the international force disputed the Afghan version of the incident. "This was the ANSF," said Maj. Martyn Crighton, referring to the Afghan National Security Forces. He said they went after three men who had been seen burying a bomb in the ground and "got engaged in a firefight with these guys."
It was not possible to reconcile the conflicting accounts.
Earlier Saturday, 10 policemen were killed when a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up in Kunduz province in the north. Elsewhere, a remote-controlled bomb planted on a bicycle exploded in the eastern city of Ghazni, killing one police officer and a civilian. And in the west, officials in Farah province said Sunday that two police officers were killed there Saturday evening when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb.
On Sunday in the south, a roadside bomb in the town of Marjah killed another three police officers, said Ahmad Zarak, a spokesman for the Helmand provincial government.

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil rose slightly Monday, a sign of investor confidence in the U.S. economy's recovery ahead of the release of data on jobs, home sales and the country's overall growth.
Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 14 cents to $96.02 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 7 cents to close at $95.88 on the Nymex on Friday after a report showed a cooling off in new U.S. home sales.
The U.S. government will release monthly durable goods figures later Monday, and the National Association of Realtors will report on pending home sales for December. Later in the week, reports on weekly jobless claims and employment data for January are due.
Analysts expect to see continuing signs of a sluggish recovery, even amid lowered expectations for fourth-quarter economic growth for 2012, to be released by the U.S. Commerce Department on Wednesday.
"If 4Q growth comes in at the 1.5 percent we expect, it will have averaged 2 percent over the past four quarters ... Slow and steady is the name of the game," analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said in a market commentary.
Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 10 cents to $113.18 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
In other energy futures trading on Nymex:
? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.7 cent to $2.883 per gallon.
? Natural gas fell 5.3 cents at $3.391 per 1,000 cubic feet.
? Heating oil rose 0.2 cent to $3.051 a gallon.
Associated PressPeople who opt for eggs in the morning have a leg up on bagel and cereal eaters -- eggs will keep you full for longer than those empty carbs. Still, it's a smart idea to opt for omelets made mostly from egg whites, says Forberg, with "maybe one whole egg for the yolk texture and flavor." (A good rule of thumb is a 3 to 1 ratio of egg whites to egg yolks, adds Bauer.) A make-your-own omelet is your best bet, says Foung, since you control what gets tossed into the mix. "Stick to fresh additions (like tomatoes, avocado and herbs) and steer clear of cured meats and items like spinach and even mushrooms that can get cooked in salted water or butter before hitting the eggs." If cooking for yourself at home, go for whatever fresh veggies you prefer, says Forberg, and try adding "a little crumble of goat cheese or a dusting of Parmesan."
If you're in the mood for French toast, there's little on the menu that will satisfy your craving in a healthier way. Just stick to one slice -- and opt for whole grain bread if it's on the menu, says Forberg. Go easy on the syrup and order a side of lean protein like eggs or Canadian Bacon and fresh fruit. "Just don't eat only a stack of buttery, syrup-drenched French toast," she says. When making your own batch at home, opt for whole wheat bread or even Ezekial sprouted bread, says Bauer, for some extra fiber and protein.
These bready goodies are also hard to makeover in the restaurant setting, so make sure portion sizes are reasonable and eat them with a lean protein and fresh fruit. If you're cooking them up at home, try going whole grain. "Whole grain flours have so much more texture and flavor," says Forberg. Or, says Bauer, try oatmeal pancakes. She offers this recipe: "Take a package of plain instant oatmeal, mix with four egg whites, a sprinkle of cinnamon and two tablespoons of whipped cottage cheese. Pour into a skillet to create whatever size pancake pleases you and cook until bubbles form on top. Turn and cook until done."
The standard for anyone who believes in the hair of the dog approach, a Bloody Mary, while, yes, containing vegetables, can also pack up to 300 calories. Not to mention all that salt. "Prepared vegetable juices are loaded with sodium," says Foung, "so your best bet here is to make the veggie juice at home and spice it up yourself." She recommends using a veggie with natural sodium, like beets. If you've got a real hankering, at the very least stick to just one.
Is it because sometimes they're made from oat bran? Or stuffed with fruit? Whatever the reason, muffins have developed a health halo they don't entirely deserve. Truth is, many have more calories, fat and sugar than donuts, so stick to small ones. The perfect portion is about the size of a lightbulb.
The components in this classic dish add up to trouble. "Opt for untraditional versions," says Foung, "like Eggs Florentine or other kinds that swap things like tomatoes, spinach and other veggies for the bread and ham." And think about what you can eliminate completely. Half of the English muffin will do, says Forberg. "And do you really need the Hollandaise sauce?"
Be aware, says Foung, that if your favorite brunch spot uses packaged potatoes, those spuds may already be seasoned (read: high in sodium) -- before the chef adds even a touch of salt. "Always ask if they make them fresh," she says. Even if they do, fried spuds won't give your brunch much of a nutritional boost. "We already have enough carbs in our breakfasts without adding potatoes," says Forberg. However, you can up the health factor at home by swapping in a sweet potato or yam, says Bauer, and going easy on the oil. She swears by the following: "Heat three tablespoons olive oil in a large frying pan on medium high heat. Add one pound grated yams, spreading them out along the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on the yams. After a few minutes, flip the yams over all at once, with the help of a large spatula. Continue to cook until they are golden brown on the bottom."
If you're not careful, a bagel and a schmear can run you upwards of 400 calories -- with little to offer nutritionally. Plus, the bagel itself can be surprisingly high in sodium -- before toppings. Opt for a half instead, says Foung, and to keep sodium in check, spread on unsalted butter, jam or avocado and top with fresh veggies instead of smoked salmon or bacon.
The key to a healthier breakfast sausage is to keep it lean, says Forberg. These days, many restaurants have a chicken or turkey option, which can have half the calories and a quarter of the fat of pork varieties.
While oats are certainly part of a healthy brunch, restaurant oatmeal is often made with cream or sugary toppings and mix-ins. Foung suggests asking your server how the house oatmeal is prepared -- and asking them to make it with water instead. If you're cooking up a bowl at home, stay away from instant varieties or anything that comes already flavored. Old-fashioned or steel cut oats boast the most fiber, Forberg says, and won't have that added sugar. Bauer has a heart-healthy recipe that's big on flavor thanks to chopped nuts and cinnamon without adding sugar: Ingredients 1 cup whole grain oats, aka Irish oats 4 cups unsweetened almond milk 1 pinch sea salt 1/3 cup shredded coconut 1/3 chopped nuts (almond, pecan, walnuts) Cinnamon to taste Directions Wash the oats under cold water and drain. Place them in a pot over high heat. Add the water and bring it to a boil. Add the salt and lower the heat to simmer for 45 minutes uncovered. Stir frequently to avoid the oats sticking to the bottom. When it?s done add the nuts and coconut, stir well and serve. Sprinkle some cinnamon to taste.
While it might jump off the menu as the healthiest choice, a restaurant parfait could be deceiving. Granola can be sneakily high in fat, and yogurt is likely to be loaded with sugar. However, Foung points out, it's a great low-sodium choice. For twice the protein and half the carbs, pick Greek yogurt for homemade parfaits, says Forberg. "Buy it plain and add your own fresh fruit," say suggests. "Otherwise you're paying for unnecessary sugar and calories."
While a glass of OJ gets a healthy rep for being "practically" fruit, juices pack all the calories of fruit but without the filling fiber, meaning it won't do anything to quench your hunger. Plus, if you're tempted to order a glass in the name of flu protection, know that vitamin C isn't all its cracked up to be when it comes to staving off germs. "It's okay now and then," says Forberg. "But I'd rather see you eat a whole orange!"

CHICAGO -- Clay Guida won by a split decision over Hatsu Hioki at UFC on Fox 6, but that result was nowhere near as important as the facial hair Guida sported to the cage on Saturday night. He had a full beard at press events all week, but told Cagewriter to expect something special for fight night. Special doesn't even come close to describe this amazing sculpture of lip fur. That mustache has won bar fights, saved kittens from trees and loves a good whiskey. Ron Swanson is jealous of that mustache.

Everybody's favourite cetacean just got a little more lovable. For the first time, dolphins have been spotted teaming up to try to rescue an injured group member. The act does not necessarily mean dolphins are selfless or can empathise with the pain of their kin, however.
Kyum Park of the Cetacean Research Institute in Ulsan, South Korea, and colleagues were surveying cetaceans in the Sea of Japan in June 2008. They spent a day following a group of about 400 long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis).
In the late morning they noticed that about 12 dolphins were swimming very close together. One female was in difficulties: it was wriggling and tipping from side to side, sometimes turning upside-down. Its pectoral flippers seemed to be paralysed.
The other dolphins crowded around it, often diving beneath it and supporting it from below. After about 30 minutes, the dolphins formed into an impromptu raft: they swam side by side with the injured female on their backs. By keeping the injured female above water, they may have helped it to breathe, avoiding drowning (see video, above).
After another few minutes some of the helper dolphins left. The injured dolphin soon dropped into a vertical position. The remaining helpers appeared to try and prop it up, possibly to keep its head above the surface, but it soon stopped breathing, say the researchers. Five dolphins stayed with it and continued touching its body, until it sank out of sight.
"It does look like quite a sophisticated way of keeping the companion up in the water," says Karen McComb at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK. Such helping behaviours are only seen in intelligent, long-lived social animals. In most species, injured animals are quickly left behind.
While it may seem selfless to help an injured fellow, McComb says the helper dolphins might get some benefit. Rescuing the struggling dolphin could help maintain their group, and thus control of their territory. Furthermore, if the group contains close relatives, protecting those relatives helps the dolphins preserve their shared genes.
The simple act of working together could also bond the group more strongly. "It makes a lot of sense in a highly intelligent and social animal for there to be support of an injured animal," McComb says.
The act of helping also seems to suggest that the dolphins understand when others are suffering, and can even empathise: that is, imagine themselves in the place of the suffering dolphin. But while this is possible, McComb says the helping behaviour could evolve without the need for empathy.
There have been reports of single dolphins helping others, generally mothers helping their calves, but no cases of groups of dolphins working together to help another. Dolphins have also been seen interacting with the corpses of dead dolphins, which some researchers interpret as a form of mourning.

If you are completely new to the world of internet marketing, then you are probably thinking that a list of tips on internet marketing will help you so that you can begin successfully promoting your website. Listed below are some tips to get you started with your internet marketing plans.
Tracking your customers is a great way to see when they?re coming, when they?re going, and how they?re getting to your site. Find resources to help you uncover this data and practice reading the data so that you can quickly and efficiently spot trends and follow them to improve your business.
It is imperative to track visitor data so that you can improve your business. Important data to track is inbound telephone calls to your business. All you need is a dedicated phone number for your business. This number should feature prominently on your website. Use a telephone tracking company that generates call reports. The type of data you would receive would be the caller?s name, telephone number and the length of the phone call.
Use offers and discounts to lure in new customers. This is a time-honored technique used in all aspects of business, but it?s actually much easier to do online because most of the back-end stuff can be handled automatically. You can also use these offers as a loss-leading lead-generation tool for other products.
Always have a pen, paper or notebook with you during the course of the day. You will never know when you will have a new idea. When it comes up, try to maximize your potential and write it down. Implement the new idea as soon as possible on your site to get it off and running.
Maximize the impact of your banner ads by not just sticking with one mind per each product. Don?t go overboard with creating a ton of different ads and posting them all at once, but try posting a small variety of different ones to see what really attracts the traffic to your site.
Add something of value to your sales proposition that can give you a leg up over the many others trying to sell the same product. Offer additional money back guarantees or a copy of an ebook that you created. Having extra added value will net you sales that might have otherwise gone elsewhere to buy.
Offer a guarantee. People are more likely to buy from you if they know that they will have some recourse if they are not satisfied. This can be a guarantee for a specific period of time, or a lifetime guarantee if you prefer. Make sure that you mention the guarantee several times in your ad, and you are more apt to make a sale.
One Internet marketing tactic that can pay off is partnering with complementary businesses. This means steering traffic from the website to suppliers of a product or service that complements the websites business without competing with it. The partner supplier returns the favor. In this way non-competitive businesses can tap into one pool of potential customers that share interest in their products.
Offering limited-time promotions can give you impressive results in Internet marketing, just as it can through more traditional channels. One feature of special offers that makes them particularly attractive is that they drum up business from both loyal customers and new business. When you offer a special bargain everyone sits up and takes notice.
Well, hopefully the aforementioned collection of tips were enough to give you a great start on what to do and expect, when it comes to marketing your own website. This collection was carefully constructed to add another resource in your arsenal, so that you can begin honing your internet marketing skills, which will then begin growing your online presence.

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Leftist former prime minister Milos Zeman won the Czech Republic's first direct presidential election on Saturday, beating a conservative opponent he had accused of favoring foreign interests in a bitter campaign.
Zeman, a 68-year-old who favors more integration within the European Union, won by 54.8 to 45.2 percent over Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, results from 99.9 percent of voting districts showed.
Economic forecaster Zeman, a Communist Party member before the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, will steer Czechs closer to Europe's mainstream.
The anti-EU rhetoric of outgoing President Vaclav Klaus, who succeeded late playwright Vaclav Havel, has pushed the country towards the margins of the 27-member bloc.
Czech presidents do not wield much day-to-day power but represent the country abroad and appoint prime ministers, central bankers and judges.
Zeman said he wants to overcome divisions provoked by the election in the central European country of 10.5 million people. The final stage of the campaign was marked by doubts cast on the national loyalties of Schwarzenberg, a prince from a centuries-old aristocratic family who lived much of his life in Austria.
Zeman promised to tackle graft, an issue which has dominated political debate for years.
"I want to be president of the bottom 10 million. These include voters of Milos Zeman as well as Karel Schwarzenberg. I do not want to be president of mafias that act as parasites on this society," Zeman said.
Zeman served as Social Democrat prime minister in 1998-2002 under a power-sharing deal with Klaus's right-wing party that critics saw as a breeding ground for corruption.
Schwarzenberg conceded defeat and congratulated Zeman, but relations between the centre-right cabinet and new president may be strained.
Zeman, who has a folksy manner and a well-advertised appetite for sausages and alcohol, appeals to poorer and rural voters, unlike the government, which has raised taxes, cut social benefits and suffered several corruption scandals.
During his premiership, Zeman was credited with privatizing the main banks and attracting foreign investment. Opponents criticize his friendship with former communist officials and businessmen with links to Russia.
Previously, Czech presidents were elected by parliamentary votes that involved a lot of back-room dealing, which led to popular demand for a constitutional change approved last year.
GHOSTS OF THE PAST
The finale of the campaign was marked by appeals to nationalism, unusual for the Czech Republic, whose biggest trading partner is Germany.
Zeman accused Schwarzenberg of backing the cause of some three million ethnic Germans, known as Sudeten Germans, who were expelled from then-Czechoslovakia after World War Two.
Schwarzenberg has said that in today's world, the expulsion could be seen as a war crime, but denied allegations he would open the door for demands to return confiscated property.
Klaus backed Zeman in the vote, saying he wanted a president who had lived in the country all his life, unlike Schwarzenberg, whose family has large land holdings in Austria where he lived in exile during the 1948-1989 communist rule.
Schwarzenberg said the election was won by lies.
"The difference of 10 percentage points was the result of this kind of campaign," he said. "It is impossible to defend against certain type of bad-mouthing."

Speaking of Alaska, the newly unemployed Sarah Palin can now see her entire day unfold from her front porch. And Mitt Romney was in Washington today, telling people that "we lost, but I'm not going away." If only Seamus could have said the same. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, January 25th, 2013:
BIDEN TALKS GUNS, LEAVES OUT MUSCLE JOKES AND ANY MENTION OF ASSAULT WEAPONS - Jen Bendery: "Vice President Joe Biden pushed several pieces of President Barack Obama's gun violence package on Friday, particularly the need for universal background checks -- one of the few items with a chance of moving through Congress. But during his remarks after a two-hour roundtable with cabinet heads and Virginia officials, Biden noticeably omitted the two most ambitious, contentious pieces of Obama's package: an assault weapons ban and a ban on high-capacity gun magazines. His silence on those fronts comes amid signs that neither stands a chance of becoming law, despite some Democrats -- and the president -- forging ahead anyway. Talking to reporters, Biden ticked off a range of recommendations the group discussed in the meeting: federal gun trafficking legislation, better access and resources for mental health services, more funding for law enforcement positions, better research into violent behavior and possible ties to violent video programming." More Wayne LaPierre awkwardness comin' atchya: "Witnesses at the first Senate hearing on gun violence since the Newtown, Conn. school shooting will include a cross-section of advocates for and against more federal legislation to control the sale and manufacturing of certain firearms. But the guest list suggests the panel tilts slightly in favor of those opposed to stricter gun laws. The Senate Judiciary Committee announced Friday that Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) -- who was shot and seriously injured in a Jan. 2011 assassination attempt -- and Wayne LaPierre, chief executive officer of the National Rifle Association, will headline a panel of five witnesses." JOHN WILL GIVE YOU EVERYWHERE ABORTION - Speaker John Boehner would probably rather be playing poker in his fantasy finished basement -- the green felt soft on his tired, orange hands; the cigar store Indian standing at attention in the corner; someone's daschund munching on spilt cashews -- than pacifying irate constituents about a politically toxic issue, but such is life. Laura Bassett: "As hundreds of thousands of people braved sub-freezing temperatures in Washington, D.C., on Friday to join the anti-abortion protest March for Life, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) took the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to banning abortion in America for good. Addressing the crowd at the National Mall via video broadcast, Boehner said it's time for anti-abortion activists to 'commit ourselves to doing everything we can to protect the sanctity of life.' Step one, he said, is making permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to pay for abortions except in cases of rape or incest...Boehner said he will make it a national priority to 'help make abortion a relic of the past.'" JOE MILLER MAY RUN AGAIN, CHALLENGE GROVER NORQUIST FOR WASHINGTON THIN BEARD SUPREMACY - National Review: "Joe Miller, a former Republican Senate nominee in Alaska, is seriously considering a return to politics. This week, in a series of meetings with Republican officials on Capitol Hill, Miller signaled his interest in challenging Senator Mark Begich, a Democrat, who is up for reelection next year. According to several sources, Miller huddled with Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He also stopped by the office of Senator Lisa Murkowski. It was the pair's first encounter since Murkowski, running as an independent, beat Miller in 2010." [National Review]

PROGRESSIVE DEMS READY TO PUNCH CHAINED CPI - A passing reference to chained CPI in a thorough budget story by The Hill newspaper's Alexander Bolton triggered a full-throated denunciation from the Congressional Progressive Caucus. (The chained CPI is the alternate measure of inflation that would save $100 billion by reducing Social Security cost-of-living adjustments. Economists says chained CPI rises more slowly than regular CPI because it accounts for the way consumers switch to pet food when the price of people food rises.) "Using the chained CPI to reduce cost of living adjustments is a benefit cut that middle class Americans cannot afford," said a statement from the CPC, which is led by Reps. Raul Grijalva and Keith Ellison. "Whether pursued through the budget process or any other means, we will do everything in our power to oppose these cuts. The American public has been clear -- they want us to defend and strengthen Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security."

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Lawmakers seeking to abolish income taxes and stymie unions in Kansas think it might also be worthwhile to make the poor and unemployed pee in cups to prove they're not wasting taxpayer money on drugs. A favorite policy of Republican legislators across the country, the latest drug-testing proposal has gathered support from leaders of Kansas's conservative-dominated statehouse. Kansas lawmakers say people who want unemployment insurance or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits would have to undergo the testing, and if they are found to have drugs in their system would be required to receive treatment or have their benefits suspended. "It adds credibility to the system," state Rep. J.R. Claeys (R-Salina) told The Huffington Post. "People are putting their hard-earned tax dollars into the program to help folks and lift them out of poverty. It makes sense that they are drug-free or are going to rehab to become drug-free." WHITE TURKEY HAS LUNCH IN WASHINGTON - Luke Johnson: "Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney did not attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama Monday, but he was in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
The Romneys attended a celebration in their honor held by Catherine Reynolds and Bill Marriott Jr., the executive chairman of Mariott Hotels, where Romney serves on the board of directors. OBAMA PLANNING IMMIGRATION PUSH NEXT WEEK - Or, the week when Republicans provided Democratic activists with enough inflammatory soundbites to turn Texas blue for the next ten cycles. Elise Foley: "President Barack Obama announced after a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Friday that he will lay out some of his plans for immigration reform on Tuesday in Las Vegas. Members of the caucus who were present at the meeting said Obama assured them that he shares the group's basic beliefs about immigration reform, most notably that making a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants -- which some Republicans oppose -- is an absolute must as they push for legislation...Seven members of Congress were present at the meeting, including Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Ruben Hinojosa (D-Texas), Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Immigration Task Force Chairman Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Chairman of the Democratic Caucus Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.). The members of the caucus said in statements after the meeting that they laid out their principles and were told by the White House that the ideas align with the administration's planned policies." INAUGURAL POLL: MAJORITY OF AMERICANS UNAMERICAN - Mark Blumenthal: "President Barack Obama's inaugural address may have irritated conservatives as much as it thrilled liberals, but opinion polling shows that most Americans agree with both the rhetoric and the substance of the most potentially combative lines in the speech...A review of recent polling as well as a set of questions asked on a new HuffPost/YouGov online poll show that more Americans agree than disagree with the president on key issues -- in most cases, by large majorities. The inaugural speech opened, for example, with a defense of a progressive approach to both market regulation and social insurance programs (like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security) -- what conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer called 'an ode to the collectivity.' Polls both new and old show that between 59 percent and 63 percent of Americans agree with Obama on three passages in which he defended activist government most clearly." [HuffPost]

COSPLAY: OBAMA INTRODUCES NEW CHIEF OF STAFF - Jen Bendery: "President Barack Obama announced Denis McDonough as the new White House chief of staff on Friday afternoon, along with a mix of other staff promotions... McDonough, who is currently Obama's deputy national security adviser, will replace Jack Lew, who the president has tapped to be his Treasury secretary. In a statement, an official described McDonough as one of Obama's 'closest and most trusted advisors for nearly a decade, dating back to when he helped set up then Senator Barack Obama's Senate office.' The official also praised McDonough's role on Obama's national security team, and his experience in working with Congress." [HuffPost]
OBAMA'S WAR ON BIKES ROLLS ON - First the inaugural motorcade disregarded Pennsylvania Avenue's bike lanes, now this. Mark Blumenthal: "President Barack Obama may have gained a new chief of staff, but Washington has apparently lost what would have been its most powerful bike commuter. In announcing the appointment of Denis McDonough as White House chief of staff on Friday, Obama addressed McDonough's children about the added demands of their father's new job. 'Dad will probably have to stop riding his bike to work,' Obama joked. 'As chief of staff, I don't think that's allowed.'" Mr. President, your love for hippie-punching knows no bounds.. [HuffPost]
COURT RULING SALTS ADMINISTRATION'S RECESS APPOINTMENT GAME - Between Elizabeth Warren and now this, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has become the "Chinese Democracy" of government agencies. AP: "In an embarrassing setback for President Barack Obama, a federal appeals court ruled Friday that he violated the Constitution in making recess appointments last year, a decision that would severely curtail the president's ability to bypass the Senate to fill administration vacancies. The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said Obama did not have the power to make three recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board because the Senate was officially in session - and not in recess - at the time. If the decision stands, it could invalidate hundreds of board decisions made over the past year... The ruling also threw into question Obama's recess appointment of Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Cordray's appointment, also made on Jan. 4, 2012, has been challenged in a separate case. The court's decision is a victory for Republicans and business groups that have been attacking the labor board for issuing a series of decisions and rules that make it easier for the nation's labor unions to organize new members." [AP]
DOJ is not impressed: "The Justice Department is standing by President Barack Obama's recess appointments...'We disagree with the court's ruling and believe that the President's recess appointments are constitutionally sound,' a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement. The statement did not indicate whether the administration would appeal the decisionto the Supreme Court, but it is expected to do so." [HuffPost's Ryan Reilly]
SAXBY CHAMBLISS TO RETIRE: NO LABELS' HEADQUARTERS INUNDATED IN TEARS - Unless he's replaced by a state senator who was named by a cat walking on a typewriter ("For Georgia, For America: Vote Ho,i1u3t+4 Christopher"), America's most oddly named senator is on the way out. "Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) is announcing Friday that he will not run for re-election in 2014, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Two Republican Georgia House members, Paul Broun and Tom Price, have been thinking of primary challenges to the Georgia senator, who has been in the Senate since 2003. Chambliss criticized anti-tax activist Grover Norquist in November, saying he cared about his country more than him. 'Norquist has no plan to pay this debt down. His plan says you continue to add to the debt, and I just have a fundamental disagreement about that and I'm willing to do the right thing and let the political consequences take care of themselves,' he said at the time." [HuffPost]
The Massachusetts Senate race is getting way more complicated: "US Representative Stephen F. Lynch said this afternoon that he hasn't yet made up his mind about running for the US Senate in the special election to fill John F. Kerry's seat. Just a day earlier, the strong message from the Lynch camp was that he would definitely be announcing his campaign next week. The Globe and other news outlets reported today that he was running for the seat. The Globe story was based on interviews with people who had direct knowledge of Lynch's decision making." [Boston Globe]
It's an uphill slog if Scott Brown enters the race. Political Wire: "A new MassINC poll in Massachusetts finds former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) leads a generic Democrat in a general election match-up for U.S. Senate, 44% to 36%. However, when matched up against Rep. Ed Markey (D) specifically, Brown leads 53% to 31%. The poll was conducted prior to news about Rep. Stephen Lynch's (D) potential entrance into the race, and does not include a head to head match-up between Brown and Lynch. [Political Wire]
RON JOHNSON'S SHIFTING VIEWS ON DIPLOMATIC DECORUM - Emily Post never got around to a guide on post-terrorist attack niceties and now the Wisconsin senator is twisting in the wind. Luke Johnson: "Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) made headlines this week for his heated confrontation with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday during her testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Johnson alleged that the Obama administration had 'purposefully misled' about the nature of the Benghazi, Libya, terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2012 that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. But the 2010 Johnson disapproved of criticizing foreign policy publicly when there are troops in the field. 'There's an appropriate way of opposing a policy and an inappropriate way,' he told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. 'The appropriate way if I'm a U.S. senator is going to be not public. If I'm opposed to something, I'll make those views known very, very well, but privately with the administration.' Johnson was running against then-Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), a vocal critic of the ongoing war in Afghanistan, and the quote was a shot at him for speaking out." [HuffPost]

Purchasing real estate is one large step into reality for first time home buyers. It?s a massive commitment, and a significant financial risk as well, which can be stressful. Apply the insights in following paragraphs to your real estate hunt, and watch your success skyrocket while your stress falls to earth.
Before you sign a lease for a rental property, speak to the landlord if there is a garden attached to the property and ask who is in charge of the maintenance. Although these costs are normally covered by the landlord, you need to know for sure. Or, this might be included in the rent.
Although they may look nice, fireplaces are not necessary in multiple rooms, so do not purchase a home with too many of them. It is a complete hassle to have to clean your fireplace when you do not often use them.
If you?re interested in investing in real estate, a good idea is to do so with the assistance of a broker or real estate agent. These people have resources you can use that you may not have direct access to yourself. Useful tools that brokers often have make use of specialized software to search and sort listings on MLS. Although you can search MLS by yourself, using these tools makes the process work better. They will give you the ability to discover excellent deals you probably wouldn?t have seen otherwise.
Be sure to save up the down payment your mortgage loan servicing company requires. If you do not, you may be stuck paying more through PMI, or Private Mortgage Insurance. This can add quite a bit of extra money that you would have to pay on a monthly basis to show the bank that you are able to make payments on your mortgage.
Okay, are you ready to buy now? You will be fine if you apply these tips. Apply the tips that fit your situation to achieve greater success. Buying real estate can be simple. It is fun and exciting to finally own something on your own. As you tour prospective properties, pay close attention to costs and choose wisely.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Masters champion Bubba Watson has withdrawn from the Farmers Insurance Open because of an illness.
Watson is a past champion at Torrey Pines, winning two years ago with a birdie putt on the final hole. He tweeted Thursday, "Pulling out of tourney this morning, don't have energy for golf. Feel the same as Maui." Watson had a stomach illness at Kapalua during the Tournament of Champions, where he tied for fourth.
Watson was to play with Phil Mickelson and defending champion Brandt Snedeker. He was replaced in the field by Billy Mayfair.

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The Sun's visible surface, or photosphere, is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. As you move outward from it, you pass through a tenuous layer of hot, ionized gas or plasma called the corona. The corona is familiar to anyone who has seen a total solar eclipse, since it glimmers ghostly white around the hidden Sun.
But how can the solar atmosphere get hotter, rather than colder, the farther you go from the Sun's surface? This mystery has puzzled solar astronomers for decades. A suborbital rocket mission that launched in July 2012 has just provided a major piece of the puzzle.
The High-resolution Coronal Imager, or Hi-C, revealed one of the mechanisms that pumps energy into the corona, heating it to temperatures up to 7 million degrees F. The secret is a complex process known as magnetic reconnection.
"This is the first time we've had images at high enough resolution to directly observe magnetic reconnection," explained Smithsonian astronomer Leon Golub (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics). "We can see details in the corona five times finer than any other instrument."
"Our team developed an exceptional instrument capable of revolutionary image resolution of the solar atmosphere. Due to the level of activity, we were able to clearly focus on an active sunspot, thereby obtaining some remarkable images," said heliophysicist Jonathan Cirtain (Marshall Space Flight Center).
Magnetic braids and loops
The Sun's activity, including solar flares and plasma eruptions, is powered by magnetic fields. Most people are familiar with the simple bar magnet, and how you can sprinkle iron filings around one to see its field looping from one end to the other. The Sun is much more complicated.
The Sun's surface is like a collection of thousand-mile-long magnets scattered around after bubbling up from inside the Sun. Magnetic fields poke out of one spot and loop around to another spot. Plasma flows along those fields, outlining them with glowing threads.
The images from Hi-C showed interweaved magnetic fields that were braided just like hair. When those braids relax and straighten, they release energy. Hi-C witnessed one such event during its flight.
It also detected an area where magnetic field lines crossed in an X, then straightened out as the fields reconnected. Minutes later, that spot erupted with a mini solar flare.
Hi-C showed that the Sun is dynamic, with magnetic fields constantly warping, twisting, and colliding in bursts of energy. Added together, those energy bursts can boost the temperature of the corona to 7 million degrees F when the Sun is particularly active.
Selecting the target
The telescope aboard Hi-C provided a resolution of 0.2 arcseconds -- about the size of a dime seen from 10 miles away. That allowed astronomers to tease out details just 100 miles in size. (For comparison, the Sun is 865,000 miles in diameter.)
Hi-C photographed the Sun in ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 19.3 nanometers -- 25 times shorter than wavelengths of visible light. That wavelength is blocked by Earth's atmosphere, so to observe it astronomers had to get above the atmosphere. The rocket's suborbital flight allowed Hi-C to collect data for just over 5 minutes before returning to Earth.
Hi-C could only view a portion of the Sun, so the team had to point it carefully. And since the Sun changes hourly, they had to select their target at the last minute -- the day of the launch. They chose a region that promised to be particularly active.
"We looked at one of the largest and most complicated active regions I've ever seen on the Sun," said Golub. "We hoped that we would see something really new, and we weren't disappointed."
Next steps
Golub said that data from Hi-C continues to be analyzed for more insights. Researchers are hunting areas where other energy release processes were occurring.
In the future, the scientists hope to launch a satellite that could observe the Sun continuously at the same level of sharp detail.
"We learned so much in just five minutes. Imagine what we could learn by watching the Sun 24/7 with this telescope," said Golub.
This research is being published in the journal Nature in a paper co-authored by Cirtain, Golub, A. Winebarger (Marshall), B. De Pontieu (Lockheed Martin), K.
